Dalam cara mengajarkan literasi dikenal dua cara berbeda yaitu yang berorientasi holistik atau disebut top-down approach/big book/whole language/contemporer serta cara kedua yang berorientasi pada komponen atau sering disebut sebagai bottom-up approac/code base approach/phonics/tradisional/skill. Pandangan pertama mengajarkan baca tulis secara natural yang dilakukan dalam konteks aktivitas sosial dan budaya yang bermakna. Dalam aplikasinya, orang tua atau guru yang berpandangan holistik akan menunjukkan perilaku mendukung, memfasiliatasi, dan memberi contoh bagaimana membaca dan menulis dalam konteks aktivitas sehari-hari yang bertujuan dan bermakna. Dengan demikian anak lebih diarahkan untuk diajak berbicara, berdiskusi, dibacakan buku cerita. Pandangan kedua lebih menekankan pada pengajaran yang menghasilkan keterampilan tertentu yang dengan keterampilan ini anak terbantu dalam baca-tulis. Orang tua atau guru yang berpandangan tradisional lebih menunjukkan perilaku fokus pada pengajaran mengenalkan kata itu sendiri melalui pengajaran alfabet, kata, kalimat dan cerita secara berurut.
