Jenderal Besar TNI Anumerta Soedirman lahir di Bodas Karangjati, Purbalingga, Jawa Tengah, 24 Januari 1916. Ia dibesarkan dalam lingkungan keluarga sederhana. Ayahnya, Karsid Kartowirodji, adalah diangkat karyawan di Pabrik Gula Kalibagor, Banyumas. Ibunya, Siyem, adalah keturunan Wedana Rembang. Sejak umur 8 bulan Soedirman diangkat sebagai anak oleh R. Tjokrosoenaryo, asisten Wedana Rembang yang masih likuid saudara dari Siyem.
Soedirman menempuh pendidikan formal di Sekolah Taman Siswa. Kemudian terjadi ia lanjut ke HIK (sekolah guru) Muhammadiyah, Surakarta, namun tidak tamat. Saat itu Soedirman giat di organisasi Pramuka Hizbul Wathan. Selanjutnya ia menjadi guru di sekolah menengah nya Muhammadiyah di Cilacap. Ia juga menjadi wakil ketua Pemuda Muhammadiyah keresidenan Banyumas.
Karir militer Soedirman dimulai pada masa pendudukan Jepang di Indonesia. Ia mengikuti pendidikan calon daidanco PETA di Bogor. Setelah lulus, ia menjadi Kuingin di Kroya. Figurnya yang kharismatik serta menampakkan kedewasaan yang jauh melampaui usianya.
Jenderal Soedirman meninggal pada pada dunia di Magelang, Jawa Tengah pada tanggal 29 Januari 1950 ikannya sakit tuberkulosis parah yang dideritanya. Ia dimakamkan di Taman Makam Pahlawan di Semaki, Yogyakarta. Tahun 1997 dia mendapat gelar sebagai Jenderal Besar Anumerta dengan bintang lima, pangkat yang hanya dimiliki oleh tiga jenderal di RI dana sekarang, Haji Muhammad Soeharto, Abdul Haris Nasution dan dirinya sendiri.
