Pada saat itu, Abdurrahman Wahid juga mendapat pengalaman politik pertamanya. Pada pemilihan umum legislatif 1982, Wahid berkampanye untuk Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP), sebuah Partai Islam yang dibentuk sebagai hasil gabungan 4 partai Islam termasuk NU. Wahid menyebut bahwa Pemerintah mengganggu kampanye PPP dengan menangkap orang seperti dirinya. Namun, Wahid selalu berhasil lepas karena memiliki hubungan dengan orang penting seperti Jendral Benny Moerdani.
