E.B. Taylor dalam Rangkuti (2002:127) menjelaskan kebudayaan sebagai segala sesuatu yang dihasilkan oleh manusia dan di antaranya terdapat dua unsure yakni unsur phenomenon (bentuk benda/materi) dan unsur noumenon (bentuk ide dan gagasan). Berdasarkan definisi tersebut gamelan menjadi salah satu bentuk kebudayaan karena gamelan merupakan hasil akal budi manusia yang berbentuk benda atau materi. Kemudian hal yang penting jika membahas mengenai kebudayaan dijelaskan oleh Parsons dalam Chris Jenks (2013:84), Pertama, bahwa kebudayaan disebarkan dan ditularkan, kebudayaan merupakan sebuah warisan atau sebuah tradisi sosial; kedua, bahwa kebudayaan dipelajari, bukan manifestasi; dan ketiga, bahwa kebudayaan dimiliki bersama. Definisi tersebut cukup untuk semakin menjelaskan bahwa gamelan adalah hasil kebudayaan yang dimiliki oleh masyarakat Indonesia secara bersama-sama dan bukan sebagai manifestasi, melainkan harus dipelajari.
Williams mendefinisikan konsep budaya menggunakan pendekatan universal, yaitu konsep budaya mengacu pada makna-makna bersama. Makna ini terpusat pada makna sehari-hari: nilai, benda-benda material/simbolis, norma. Kebudayaan adalah pengalaman dalam hidup sehari-hari: berbagai teks, praktik, dan makna semua orang dalam menjalani hidup mereka (Barker, 2005: 50-55).

Pembelajaran bahasa Ingris menjadi wadah untuk memberikan pengetahuan budaya secara umum. Semua teks untuk keterampilan reading activity mengandung berbagai wujud budaya disajikan dalam beberapa bentuk melalu folklore, speech, personal opinion, drama and letter. Teks-teks yang disajikan memberikan kemudahan untuk siswa-siswi dalam memahami isi dan secara langsung menyelipkan pemahaman kebudayaan diberbagai negara. Pada buku BSE tersebut sangat bermanfaat untuk siswa memperoleh ilmu bukan hanya pada dapat mengerti bahasa ingris akan tetapi juga mendapatkan pengetahuan kebudayaan dari berbagai negara.
