Catalytic Converter, pertama kali ditemukan pada tahun 1975 di Amerika Serikat. Teknologi otomotif saat ini mulai menerapkan teknologi yang ramah lingkungan yaitu dengan menggunakan catalytic converter akan dapat mengurangi gas buang yang berbahaya melalui reaksi kimia sehingga nantinya gas-gas tersebut akan berubah menjadi gas yang tidak berbahaya bagi lingkungan.
Logam katalis yang dipakai pada penelitian ini menggunakan plat baja A36 yang berbentuk pipa berlubang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemasangan katalis terhadap emisi gas buang dalam mereduksi gas hidrokarbon (HC) dan karbon monoksida (CO), di sisi lain juga dapat memberikan salah satu alternatif solusi terhadap masalah polusi udara.
Hasil pengujian emisi gas buang terendah dibandingkan dengan knalpot standart diperoleh pada variasi 2 dengan diameter lubang katalis 10 mm yaitu karbon monoksida (CO) sebesar 1,46 % dan hidrokarbon (HC) sebesar 125 ppm, sedangkan pada knalpot standart yaitu karbon monoksida (CO) sebesar 1,9 % dan hidrokarbon (HC) sebesar 607 ppm. Dalam hal ini catalytic converter dapat menurunkan emisi gas buang CO dan HC dengan baik
