Mercedes introduces the G-Class Professional – because they canThe newest interpretation of the iconic Gelandwagen is not going to keep up with appearances – just because the German company has reached the kind of legendary status for this model to be able to care about anyone it wants. The G Class has been a tired and tested favorite of the rich and famous but its legendary off-road capabilities mean it can easily get down and dirty – and survive practically any ordeal. To enforce the practical setting, there’s a new G 350 d Professional which is “ideally suited to grueling off-road use and professional applications.” Using the well known “purist design,” the G 350 d Professional has no bling and comes with a matte black grille, headlight protectors, and 16-inch alloy wheels with a black finish. The version also features a modified suspension setup which adds some additional 0.4 inches of ground clearance. This in turn enhances the approach angle, which now stands at 36 degrees. There’s more no frills styling inside the cabin to make sure you understand this is no G63 AMG. No wood trim and no smartphone enhanced infotainment systems are here, with drivers treated to a multifunction steering wheel, anti-slip flooring, and partially power-adjustable front seats. Under the mighty hood stands a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine good for 245 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, linked to a 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and a permanent all-wheel drive with three electric locking differentials. The performance credentials are good: 0-62 miles per hour in 8.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 99 mph (almost 160 km/h). The efficiency has also been improved over the predecessor – the G 300 CDI Professional, now averaging 23.7 miles per gallon – up 15.4 percent. The new G 350 d Professional will reach dealerships this month in Germany and pricing starts from €79,968 (including 19% VAT).
