Dalam teori Piaget memandang bahwa perkembangan kognitif seseorang sebagai suatu proses di mana anak secara aktif mebangun sistem makna dan pemahaman realitas melalui pengalaman-pengalaman dan interaksi-interaksi mereka (Trianto. 2007: 14). Menurut Natsir (2004: 6) memahami perkembangan intelektual anak adalah bagian penting dari upaya seorang guru untuk membuat peserta didiknya belajar. Peserta didik akan belajar dengan baik jika diberi tugas dalam kegiatan pembelajarannya yang sesuai dengan tingkat perkembangan intelektualnya. Peserta didik akan sulit belajar atau mengerjakan tugas-tugasnya jika tugas tersebut berada diluar tingkat kemampuan berpikirnya. Menurut Piaget, perkembangan kognitif seseorang melalui empat tahap, yaitu tahap sensorimotor, praoperasional, operasional kongkret dan operasional formal.
