Dalam pandangan Jost, sastra bandingan dapat meliputi aspek: pengaruh, sumber ilham (acuan), proses pengambilan ilham atau pengaruh dan tema dasar. Dalam kaitan ini ada empat kelompok kajian sastra bandingan jika dilihat dari aspek objek garapan yaitu; Pertama, kategori yang melihat hubungan karya sastu dengan lainnya dengan menelusuri juga kemungkinan adanya pengaruh satu karya terhadap karya yang lain. Termasuk dalam interdispliner dalam sastra bandingan adalah filsafat, sosiologi agama dan sebagainya. Kedua, kategori yang mengkaji tema karya sastra. Ketiga, kajian terhadap gerakan atau kecenderungan yang menandai suatu peradaban. Keempat, analisis bentuk karya sastra (genre).
Dalam lingkup kajian demikian, secara garis besar dapat dibedakan menjadi dua golongan yakni: (1) kajian persamaan dan (2) kajian konsep pengaruh. Kajian persamaan, tidak selau menjawab masalah; mengapa terdapat persamaan namun juga lebih kepada apabila dua karya sastra memiliki kesamaan berarti ada hal paralel dalam bidang tertentu.
