Salah satu fungsi pendidikan tinggi adalah mencetak tenaga-tenaga professional diberbagai bidang keahlian. Oleh karena itu berbagai program studi telah dibuka dikembangkan di perguruan tinggi. Namun dari keseluruhan program studi yang dibuka dan dikembangkan oleh perguruan tinggi tidak semuanya diminati dan dipilih oleh para calon mahasiswa. Hanya program-program studi tertentu saja yang banyak diminati dan dipilih oleh mereka,terutama program studi yang “marketable” dan memiliki “prospek” dalam pengembangan karier mereka setelah selesai studi. Masuk akal bila mereka memilih program studi sesuai dengan karier yang diinginkan di masa depan,karena telah diamsusikan bahwa kebanyakan lulusan perguruan tinggi akan mendapatkan pekerjaan yang sesuai dengan jurusannya ketika di perguruan tinggi. Berdasarkan studi singkat yang dilakukan, akhirnya dapat disimpulkan bahwa asumsi-asumsi tersebut tidak bisa dipertahankan. Latar belakang pendidikan tinggi memang memiliki peluang awal dalam rekruting tenaga kerja, akan tetapi tidak paling dicari, tidak paling menentukan keputusan rekrutmen,dan lebih jauh tidak menentukan kesuksesan karir di masa-masa berikutnya. Yang paling menentukan adalah kemampuan personal dan interpersonal. Kualifikasi inilah justru yang paling menentukan, paling dicari dan paling menentukan kesuksesan karir di masa berikutnya.
