YouTube saat ini merupakan salah satu website paling populer sejagad. Pada tahun 2007 Youtube mencapai puncak kesuksesannya dalam persaingan bisnis di internet setelah mereka memiliki ribuan bahkan sampai jutaan member baik yang aktif maupun yang tidak aktif di seluruh dunia. Banyak dari kita mengunjungi ke web ini hanya ingin mencari berita, hasil pertandingan sepak bola, menonton video lucu, klip lagu hingga potongan video panas dapat kita akses dan tonton secara gratis. Youtube merupakan tempat file sharing bagi semua membernya di mana kita bisa mencari atau meng upload video rekaman kita untuk dapat di saksikan oleh orang lain. 

Awalnya YouTube digawangi oleh tiga eks pegawai PayPal, adalah Chad Hurley, Steve Chen dan Jawed Karim. Hurley merupakan alumnus design di University Indiana Pennsylvania, sedangkan Chen dan Karim alumnus ilmu komputer di University Illinois Urbana-Champaign. YouTube.com dipublikasikan pada Mei 2005, atau tepatnya bulan Nopember, 6 bulan sebelum launching secara resmi.

YouTube bermula dari usaha kecil di sebuah kantor di sebuah garasi. Pada November 2005, Sequoia Capital, menginvestasikan US$ 3,5 juta, ditambah Roelof Botha, mantan CFO PayPal, bergabung dengan jajaran direksi YouTube. Pada April 2006 Sequoia menambah investasi US$ 8 juta, dimana YouTube tengah mencapai tingkat kesuksesan dan pertumbuhan yang pesat.

Pada summer 2006, YouTube menjadi salah satu website terpesat pertumbuhannya, dan ditempatkan oleh Alexa.com sebagai website terpopuler ke-5, jauh melebihi pertumbuhan MySpace saat itu. Pada bulan Juli 2006, 100 juta video clip dikunjungi setiap hari di YouTube, dengan tambahan 65.000 video baru diupload setiap 24 jam. Menurut data, YouTube dikunjungi rata-rata 20 juta user setiap bulan, dengan penggunanya sekitar 56% laki-laki dan 44% wanita. User dominan berusia antara 12 hingga 17 tahun. Keunggulan YouTube dalam pasar online video cukup mengejutkan, YouTube menguasai 64% pasar online video di Inggris menurut beberapa sumber.
