Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb.

Para pemirsa sekalian, para hadirin dan hadirat yang ada di ruangan
ini, saya merasa berbahagia dapat berada di sini, diberi tugas
untuk menghantarkan pidato nanti yang adalah pidato saya juga. Tapi
karena saya tidak melihat, jadi tidak bisa membaca, akan dibacakan
oleh Saudara Wimar Witoelar.

Prosesnya begini, beberapa hari yang lalu, Saudara Singgih dari
Panitia Perintis Kemerdekaan datang menemui saya, dan meminta agar
supaya saya keluar dengan Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri, wakil
presiden kita, di TVRI ini.

Saya bilang, saya setuju. Tapi, beliau kabarnya besok pagi akan
pergi ke Bali. Nah, demikianlah yang terjadi, yaitu bahwa, Ibu
Megawati pergi ke Bali. Pulangnya, flu berat. Sehingga oleh dokter
tidak boleh keluar. Dan kemarin, Sidang Kabinet yang memimpin Bapak
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, karena biasanya Ibu Megawati, yang sakit
itu.

Acara ini diteruskan walaupun tidak ada dia. Dan nanti akan
dibacakan oleh Saudara Wimar Witoelar, susunan pidato, yang menjadi
pidato saya pada malam ini. Isinya seirama dengan yang dilakukan
atau yang diajukan oleh Ibu SK Trimurti tadi.

Jadi, apa pembawa acara lupa mengatakan bahwa Ibu Trimurti ini
usianya sudah 90 tahun. Dan, beliau ini dulu menteri perburuhan di
dalam kabinet kita di masa pemerintahan yang baru saja merdeka.
Beliau adalah pejuang yang luar biasa. Dan sampai saat ini masih
menaruh minat sangat besar kepada perjuangan kita.

Kalau tadi disinggung-singgung dia memukul-mukul dada saya, itu
tanda sayangnya, lihat cucunya sudah besar. Kami jarang bertemu.
Yah, demikianlah jadinya kalau jarang bertemu. Mudah-mudahan kita
masih bisa mendapatkan restu dari beliau untuk bangsa yang damai
dan bangsa yang besar serta jaya.

Saya percaya akan hal ini dan kita, marilah memulai lembaran baru
dalam kehidupan kita berbangsa yang nanti akan dilanjutkan dengan
perubahan UUD pada tahun 2002. Sudah jelas setahun lagi lah.

Dan juga untuk menjadi bangsa yang bener. Karena sekarang ini
terjadi penafsiran bermacam-macam terhadap UUD. Suatu hal yang
biasa saja.

Maka di negari kita kalau sekarang ini orang lagi ketakutan, bahkan
ada yang panik, saya sendiri sih berpendapat bahwa ini merupakan
jatuh bangunnya sebuah bangsa. Kalau mau berdiri, mau besar, ya
harus begini. Ya, artinya apa? Sebagai pohon yang tinggi, kita
harus berani diterpa oleh angin yang kuat.

Saya rasa demikianlah. Saya persilakan Saudara Wimar Witoelar
membacakan pidato dari presiden. Terima kasih.

Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb.

Saudara-saudara sebangsa dan setanah air, pada kesempatan ini, saya
ingin mengajak segenap bangsa Indonesia untuk sejenak melihat
kembali perjalanan sejarah yang telah kita lalui.

Hal ini menjadi sangat penting, agar dalam meniti perjalanan bangsa
ke depan, kita tidak terjebak ke dalam perilaku saling menyalahkan,
saling curiga, saling menghujat dan saling menjatuhkan.

Sejarah perjalanan bangsa ini, diawali dari zaman perjuangan yang
diwarnai dengan tetesan darah, keringat dan air mata. Ketika bangsa
kita hidup di bawah penindasan bangsa lain, peradaban kita sebagai
bangsa terinjak-injak. Harkat dan martabat kita tidak ada sama
sekali.

Bangsa kita menjadi sapi perahan kaum penjajah yang dalam kurun
waktu hampir 3,5 abad hidup dalam kesengsaraan. Kemudian bangkit
semangat untuk melawan, melalui perjuangan panjang yang dilakukan
oleh para pendahulu kita. Orang-orang tua kita.

Maka dengan rahmat Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, yang didorong oleh
keinginan yang luhur, perjuangan bangsa ini sampai pada saat yang
berbahagia, merdeka, berdaulat, dalam wadah negara kesatuan
Republik Indonesia.

Sehingga tepat pada tanggal 17 Agustus 1945, Bung Karno dan Bung
Hatta, atas nama bangsa Indonesia, memproklamirkan kemerdekaan
Indonesia. setelah Indonesia merdeka, Bung Karno menjadi presiden
pertama di negeri ini.

Di bawah pemerintahan Presiden Soekarno, bangsa kita berkembang
pesat. Hal itu dapat dibuktikan dengan begitu cepatnya bangsa
Indonesia berada dalam posisi setara dengan bangsa-bangsa lain di
mata dunia. Bung Karno selalu menunjukkan kepada dunia bahwa kita
adalah bangsa yang besar.

Saudara-saudara sebangsa dan setanah air, perjalanan sejarah bangsa
ini, bergulir dari waktu ke waktu. Pergeseran kepemimpinan pun
terjadi. Dari presiden pertama Soekarno, kepada presiden kedua
Soeharto.

Pada kancah pemerintahan Presiden Soeharto, bangsa kita juga
semakin berkembang. Bahkan sempat mencapai kejayaan. Nama Soeharto
pun dikenal oleh dunia.

Sayang sekali, seiring dengan kejayaan pemerintahannya, utang luar
negeri kita membengkak sedemikian besarnya. Korupsi, kolusi dan
nepotisme terjadi di mana-mana. Dan yang lebih menyedihkan, adalah
adanya bukti-bukti sejarah yang diputarbalikkan.

Perjalanan bangsa ini pun mulai terkotak-kotak dengan yang namanya
orde. Pak Harto menamakan pemerintahan Presiden Soekarno sebagai
Orde Lama dan menamakan pemerintahannya sebagai Orde Baru.

Pada zaman pemerintahan Soeharto, sama sekali tidak terlihat adanya
tanda-tanda kehidupan demokratis. Kejayaan pemerintahan Soeharto
merupakan kejayaan semu. Kejayaan itu bagaikan fatamorgana. Hanya
indah dipandang dari kejauhan.

Pak Harto yang berkuasa selama 32 tahun, ternyata hanya menghantar
bangsa ini ke jurang kehancuran. Sehingga, mau tidak mau kita harus
menerima akibatnya. Menghadapi berbagai krisis dan berbagai
permasalahan.

Kemudian, melalui gerakan reformasi oleh para mahasiswa, yang
menuntut adanya pembaharuan di segala bidang, pemerintahan Presiden
Soeharto, yang identik dengan otoriternya, tumbang.

Setelah itu terjadilah pemerintahan transisi, dari Presiden
Soeharto kepada Wakil Presiden BJ Habibie, yang secara
konstitusional berhak menggantikannya. Pemerintah Presiden BJ
Habibie tidak bertahan lama.

Yang berikutnya, bangsa kita menyelenggarakan euforia pemilihan
umum. Dari hasil penghitungan suara terbanyak waktu itu, Pemilu
dimenangkan oleh PDIP pimpinan Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Tentunya beliau yang pantas menjadi presiden sekarang ini. Karena
apa, karena beliau lah pemimpin partai yang memenangkan Pemilu
dengan memperoleh suara jauh lebih besar dibandingkan dengan
partai-partai lainnya.

Namun, mengingat ketegangan politik sangat memuncak pada saat itu,
bangsa kita seakan berada di ambang perpecahan. Kemudian Poros
Tengah yang diprakarsai oleh Bapak Amien Rais mencoba mencari jalan
keluar dari kemelut yang telah menghimpit bangsa.

Dipilihlah saya untuk menjadi presiden, dengan alasan pada waktu
itu, saya yang bisa diterima oleh segenap lapisan. Sehingga semua
berharap saya mampu menjadi perekat bangsa. Dengan kata lain, saya
menjadi presiden ini bukan karena saya orang hebat, tapi karena
keadaan.

Mungkin yang menjadi pertimbangan lain adalah, saya punya ummat,
punya pengikut dan punya rakyat yang bukan hanya sekadar simpatisan
partai. Antara saya dengan ummat, antara ummat dengan saya,
terjalin hubungan batin yang sangat mahabbah. Arti kata mahabbah di
sini adalah cinta.

Mereka tersebar di seluruh Indonesia dan merupakan bagian besar
dari penduduk bangsa ini. Sehingga kalau saya dipilih untuk menjadi
perekat bangsa, mungkin itu dapat dimengerti.

Namun yang paling saya hormati pada waktu itu, adalah sikap Ibu
Megawati Soekarnoputri yang dengan legowo memberikan kesempatan
kepada saya untuk memimpin bangsa ini.

Lebih dari itu, beliau juga mampu meredam emosi pendukungnya, yang
tentu saja sangat kecewa. Karena, orang yang dibanggakan, yang
notabene sebagai pemimpin partai pemenang Pemilu, rela untuk tidak
menjadi presiden.

Andaikata pada waktu itu, Ibu Megawati bersikap sebagai pemimpin
partai, tentu apapun alasannya, tidak akan mau menerima kenyataan
itu. Tetapi, karena beliau bersikap sebagai negarawan sejati, di
mana di dalam tubuh beliau mengalir darah Bung Karno, tidak ada
yang lebih berharga bagi Ibu Megawati, kecuali utuhnya Negara
Kesatuan Republik Indonesia, lestarinya Pancasila dan bersatunya
anak bangsa.

Saudara-saudara sebangsa dan setanah air, setelah saya menjadi
presiden, ternyata yang ada di depan saya, hanyalah puing-puing
tajam reruntuhan pemerintah masa lalu, utang luar negeri yang
sedemikian besar, perekonomian yang porak-poranda, kesenjangan
sosial dan berbagai gejolak serta tuntutan-tuntutan muncul di
mana-mana.

Kondisi bangsa ini sungguh sangat memprihatinkan. Sekalipun dalam
satu tahun, bangsa ini seratus kali ganti presiden, tidak akan ada
yang mampu memulihkan perekonomian kita, yang memang sudah sangat
terpuruk ini dalam waktu yang singkat.

Sebenarnya, saya sedang melakukan langkah-langkah awal dalam
menangani berbagai masalah yang sangat sulit dan kompleks ini.
Hendaknya jangan terlalu cepat menilai saya tidak mampu menjalankan
roda pemerintahan, kemudian berusaha menggulingkan saya dengan
mencari kesalahan.

Kalau kesalahan yang dicari, saya ini memang manusia biasa,
tempatnya salah, tempatnya keliru. Kalau saya dianggap salah atau
keliru, ya saya minta dimaklumi dan dimaafkan.
