Seharusnya masyarakat tidak boleh menghakimi dan memperlakukan orang secara berlebihan, seperti mengisolasi Hester dalam lingkungan pergaulannya. Padahal, Hester sudah memenuhi hukuman yang harus dia tanggung, yaitu masuk penjara. Setiap orang memiliki hak untuk hidup yang seperti menyuarakan isi hati dan bergaul dengan masyarakat.
