Dia memiliki keberanian, ketegasan, tanggung jawab, dan berpantang akan kesewenangan. Pengalaman tidak manis pernah dialaminya ketika masih bersekolah di Europeesche Lagere School (ELS). Karena berkelahi dengan seorang anak Belanda, dia akhirnya dikeluarkan dari sekolah tersebut. Kasus itu sudah cukup menunjukkan bahwa sejak kecil dirinya sudah memiliki sifat pemberani dan tegas. Di kala orang tidak ada yang berani menantang anak-anak Belanda yang merasa lebih tinggi derajatnya dari kaum pribumi, Gatot Subroto dengan tanpa gentar sedikitpun maju menantang.

Dikeluarkan dari sekolah ELS dia kemudian masuk ke sekolah Holands Inlandse School (HIS). Dari sana, dia akhirnya menyelesaikan pendidikan formalnya. Namun setamat HIS, dia memilih tidak meneruskan pendidikannya ke sekolah yang lebih tinggi, tetapi bekerja sebagai pegawai. Pilihannya menjadi pegawai tersebut ternyata juga tidak memuaskan jiwanya. Dia kemudian keluar dari pekerjaanya dan masuk sekolah militer di Magelang pada tahun 1923. Setelah menyelesaikan pendidikan militer, Gatot pun menjadi anggota KNIL (Tentara Hindia Belanda) hingga akhir pendudukan Belanda di Indonesia.

Tentara yang aktif dalam tiga zaman ini pernah menjadi Tentara Hindia Belanda (KNIL) pada masa pendudukan Belanda, anggota Pembela Tanah Air (Peta) pada masa pendudukan Jepang dan Tentara Keamanan Rakyat (TKR) setelah kemerdekaan Indonesia serta turut menumpas PKI pada tahun 1948. Ia juga menjadi penggagas terbentuknya Akademi Angkatan Bersenjata Republik Indonesia (AKABRI). Berpendirian tegas dan memiliki solidaritas yang tinggi, merupakan ciri khas dari Jenderal Gatot Subroto. Pria lulusan Sekolah Militer Magelang masa pemerintahan Belanda, ini paling tidak bisa mentolerir setiap tindak kezaliman, walau oleh siapapun dan kapanpun.
