Pada masa Kesultanan Palembang, sekitar abad ke-16, di wilayah Batanghari Sembilan mulai masuk penyebar agama Islam. Salah satu diantaranya adalah seorang perempuan yang dianggap suci bernama Bagus Kuning. Konon, ia adalah salah satu murid dari sembilan wali di Pulau Jawa yang dikenal dengan nama Walisongo.Kehadirannya di Palembang adalah untuk menyebarkan agama Islam.

Perjalanan menuju Palembang tentu saja tidak mudah. Banyak halangan dan rintangan yang harus ia hadapi dan atasi. Demikian pula dengan ajaran yang disampaikannya, tidak begitu saja diterima oleh penduduk setempat. Bahkan ia sering harus bertarung dan siap mengorbankan jiwanya demi menyebarkan ajaran Rasulullah. Beruntunglah dia memiliki bekal kepandaian yang cukup hebat untuk membela diri sehingga banyak musuh yang dapat ditaklukkan dan turut memeluk agama Islam.

Ketika Bagus Kuning memasuki wilayah perairan Batanghari, ia pun harus berhadapan dengan para pendekar setempat yang berilmu tinggi. Namun ia tetap menghadapinya dengan sabar dan memantapkan keyakinannya bahwa cukuplah Allah SWT pelindung dan penolong baginya. Pada akhirnya ia mampu menaklukkan para pendekar di wilayah batanghari ini, konon ada 11 penghulu yang dipercaya masyarakat sebagai pengikut setia Bagus Kuning, yaitu Penghulu Gede, Datuk Buyung, Kuncung Emas, Panglima Bisu, Panglima Api, Syekh Ali Akbar, Syekh Maulana Malik Ibrahim, Syekh Idrus, Putri Kembang Dadar, Putri Rambut Selako, dan Bujang Juaro.

Setelah mampu menguasai wilayah Batanghari, Bagus Kuning dan anak buahnya pun memasuki tengah kota Palembang. Kemudian mereka singgah di bagian hulu kota yang sekarang dikenal dengan nama Plaju. Di tempat ini mereka mendapati suatu dataran rendah yang ditumbuhi pohon-pohon besar yang rindang dan teduh. Mereka pun beristirahat dengan nyaman.

Setelah bermalam barulah Bagus Kuning menyadari tempat tersebut bukanlah tempat yang aman. Tempat yang berada di tepia sungai Musi itu ternyata merupakan kerajaan Siluman Kera. Para siluman kera di tempat ini tampaknya merasa terganggu dengan kedatangan rombongan Bagus Kuning dan mencoba untuk menakut-nakuti.

“Maaf, kami tidak bermaksud untuk mengganggu. Kami hanya menumpang singgah untuk melepas lelah karena kami lihat tempat ini cukup indah dan nyaman,” berkata Bagus Kuning kepada rombongan siluman kera.

Namun, para siluman kera tidak mau tahu. Mereka mengancam akan membunuh rombongan Bagus Kuning jika mereka tidak mau pergi meninggalkan wilayah kekuasaan siluman kera ini.

“Kami mendengar bahwa kalian adalah para penyebara ajaran Islam, pantang bagi kami untuk melepaskan kalian karena itu sama saja kami membantu kalian!", ucap Raja Siluman Kera.

Tampaknya percekcokan antara Bagus Kuning dan Raja Siluman tak dapat dielakkan lagi dan keduanya sama-sama tidak mau mengalah. Akhirnya pertarunganpun tak dapat terhindarkan lagi. Mereka dan pasukannya masing-masing saling menyerang dan saling adu kekuatan.

“Hai Raja Siluman Kera, aku tidak mau mengorbankan banyak teman-temanku hanya untuk menghadapimu. Sebagai pemimpin disini aku ingin mengajukan sebuah perjanjian kepadamu, jika aku kalah menghadapi satu lawan satu makan aku akan tunduk kepadamu. Sebaliknya, jika kau yang ku kalahkan maka kau harus tunduk kepadaku!’’ tantang Bagus Kuning.

“Tidak masalah bagiku, hai Bagus Kuning! Hai rakyatku, kalianlah saksi atas perjanjian ini yang mana jika aku dapat dikalahkan oleh perempuan ini maka aku dan juga kalian harus tunduk dan patuh terhadap manusia perempuan ini. Para siluman kera pun segara menepi untuk memberi ruang para Raja mereka. Demikian pula para pengikut Bagus Kuning yang juga menepi sambil terus melafalkan doa-doa keselamatan dan kemenangan bagi mereka.

Pertarungan akhirnya dimulai. Bumi bagaikan bergetar, pohon-pohon pun bergoyang bagikan diayun-ayun angin besar, suara gemuruh mengiringi pertarungan ini tapi tak ada angin. Ini semua karena kesaktian Raja Siluman dan kekuatan karomah Bagus Kuning. Kedua-duanya adalah orang yang memiliki kekuatan yang sangat hebat dan seimbang sehingga keduanya susah untuk merubuhkan musuh masing-masing.

Setelah beberapa lama, sejak pertarungan yang dimulai pagi hari kini matahari pun telah berdiri tegak menyinari dengan teriknya akhirnya nampak jualah siapa yang bakal menjadi pemenang dalam pertarungan ini. Beberapa kali Raja Siluman Kera terbanting keras. Darahpun banyak keluar dari mulut dan hidungnya. Napasnya pun makin tersengal-sengal dan wajahnya pucat. Namun sesekali ia masih dapat membalas dengan usahanya yang sangat berat. Tapi karena kondisinya yang cukup parah setelah mendapatkan terjangan maut dari Bagus Kuning ia pun roboh dan sang Raja Siluman kera ini mengaku kalah (menyerah).
