Geisha merupakan seniman-penghibur

Geisha merupakan seniman-penghibur tradisional di Jepang. Geisha mulai muncul dan menjadi sangat umum pada abad ke-18 dan ke-19, dan masih terkenal hingga sekarang, meskipun jumlahnya sudah mulai menurun. Sebutan lain untuk Geisha diantaranya “Geiko” dan “Maiko”. Istilah “Geiko” dan “Maiko” mulai dipakai pada jaman Restorasi Meiji. Istilah Geiko merupakan sebutan lain untuk Geisha sedangkan Maiko merupakan sebutan untuk Geisha pemula. Sebutan Maiko hanya dipakai di daerah Kyoto saja. Saat pertama muncul, semua Geisha adalah laki-laki, sedangkan saat perempuan mulai mengambil alih peran, istilah Geisha sempat berubah menjadi Onna Geisha atau “seniman wanita”. Namun sekarang semua Geisha hanya diperbolehkan untuk perempuan saja.
