Prinsip kerja AC Split maupun pada mesin pendingin model lainnya adalah sama yaitu menyerap panas udara didalam ruangan yang didinginkan, kemudian melepaskan panas keluar ruangan. Jadi pengertian AC Split adalah seperangkat alat yang mampu mengkondisikan suhu ruangan sesuai yang kita inginkan, terutama mengkondisikan suhu ruangan menjadi lebih rendah suhunya dibanding suhu lingkungan sekitarnya.

Jadi , temperatur udara yang rendah atau dingin yang kita rasakan pada ruangan sebenarnya adalah sirkulasi udara di dalam ruangan, bukan udara yang dihasilkan oleh perangkat AC Split. Unit AC hanyalah tempat bersikulasinya udara ruangan yang sekaligus menangkap kalor (panas) pada udara ruangan yang bersirkulasi melewati evaporator hingga mencapai temperatur yang diinginkan.
