Menurut HASKA :2012, Bilangan Oktan adalah angka yang menunjukkan kesamaan atau kesetaraan performa yang diberikan oleh suatu bahan bakar gasoline dengan kemampuan yang diberikan oleh campuran dalam % volume antara iso-Oktan dan normal-Heptan yang diuji menggunakan mesin standar CFR F1. Artinya, bila bahan bakar Pertamax memiliki angka oktan 92 artinya Pertamax tersebut memiliki kemampuan yang sama dengan bahan bakar standar yang terbuat dari 92% iso-Oktan dan 8% normal-Heptan jika diuji menggunakan mesin standar CFR F1. Bilangan oktana dari suatu bahan bakar adalah bilangan yang menyatakan berapa persen volume iso-oktana dalam campuran yang terdiri dari iso-oktana dan heptana normal yang mempunyai kecenderungan berdetonasi sama dengan bakar bakar tersebut (Arismunandar, 2005:86)
