Kekurangan Energi Protein (KEP) merupakan masalah gizi di Indonesia yang masih tinggi. Kekurangan Energi Protein (KEP) adalah keadaan kurang gizi yang disebabkan oleh rendahnya konsumsi energi dan protein dalam makanan sehari-hari sehingga tidak mampu memenuhi kebutuhan gizi makro (zat tenaga, zat pembangun dan lemak) yang biasanya disertai kekurangan zat gizi mikro (Vitamin A, Besi, Seng, Vitamin B dan sebagainya) sesuai dengan angka kecukupan gizi (AKG). Balita merupakan kelompok umur yang paling rawan menderita kekurangan gizi (KEP). Kelompok usia 6-24 bulan merupakan kelompok terbanyak yang menderita kekurangan energi protein, karena pada usia ini anak sudah memasuki masa sapihan yang tidak di ikuti dengan pemberian makanan yang cukup memenuhi gizi. Secara umum faktor-faktor yang menentukan keadaan gizi masyarakat, khususnya anak-anak adalah tingkat pendidikan orang tua, keadaan ekonomi, ketersedian makanan serta aspek-aspek kesehatan. Tiap-tiap faktor tersebut dapat berpengaruh pada keadaan gizi masyarakat, baik secara langsung maupun tidak langsung.

Protein Energy deficiency (KEP) is a State of undernourishment caused by low consumption of energy and protein in your daily diet so it is not able to meet the needs of macro nutrients (energy, substances substances builders and FAT) that is usually accompanied by lack of micro-nutrients (Vitamin A, iron, zinc, Vitamin B and so forth) in accordance with a number of nutritional adequacy (RDA). A toddler is the age group most prone to suffer from malnutrition (KEP). Age group 6-24 months is the largest group suffering from protein energy deficiency, because at this age children have already entered a period of sapihan who do not follow with sufficient feeding meet nutrition.
