Batik merupakan kerajinan yang memiliki nilai seni tinggi dan telah menjadi bagian dari budaya Indonesia sejak lama. Perempuan-perempuan Jawa pada masa lampau menjadikan keterampilan mereka dalam membatik sebagai mata pencaharian, sehingga pada masa lalu pekerjaan membatik adalah pekerjaan eksklusif perempuan.
Batik adalah ekspresi budaya yang memiliki makna simbolis dan nilai estetika yang tinggi bagi masyarakat Indonesia. Keunikan yang indah itu merupakan salah satu pembentuk karakter bangsa Indonesia yang membedakan kita dengan bangsa lain sehingga dapat menjadi identitas dan jati diri bangsa.
Tanggal 2 Oktober ditetapkan menjadi hari batik nasional oleh mantan presiden Indonesia bapak Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Berdasarkan keputusan United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) yang mengakui batik Indonesia sebagai warisan budaya dunia.
Penetapan Hari Batik Nasional sebagai usaha untuk meningkatkan martabat bangsa Indonesia dan citra positif di forum internasional, serta untuk menumbuhkan kebanggaan dan kecintaan masyarakat terhadap kebudayaan Indonesia. Batik bukan hanya untuk orang Jawa, atau untuk kalangan tertentu saja. Setiap orang dari berbagai suku dan kelas, kini merasa bangga menggunakan batik
Sejak ditetapkan sebagai hari batik nasional kemudian semua instansi yang ada di wilayah Indonesia berusaha untuk dapat berpartisipasi memperingatinya. Salah satu usahanya yaitu menggunakan batik Indonesia pada tanggal 2 oktober. Hal ini dapat menunjukan kepada dunia bahwa warga Indonesia sangat mencintai batik sebagai budayanya.
Pada hari kamis tanggal 2 Oktober 2014 semua warga SMA N 1 Slawi menggunakan pakaian batik Indonesia dalam rangka memperingati hari batik nasional dan juga menunjukan bahwa kami mencintai batik Indonesia dan semua produk dalam negeri. Sebagai warga Negara Indonesia kami sangat cinta tanah air kami yang kaya akan budaya ini.
