Sebagai pelaksana bidan memiliki 3 kategori tugas yaitu tugas mandiri, tugas kolaborasi, dan tugas ketergantungan. Bidan mempunyai tugas mandiri sebagai pelaksana untuk memberikan asuhan kebidanan pada klien dalam masa persalinan dengan melibatkan klien/ keluarga dan memberikan asuhan kebidanan pada bayi baru lahir. (Heni, P.W., Asmar Y.Z., 2005). Dalam ruang lingkup yang lebih luas dalam hal ini bidan menolong persalinan, mendukung ibu untuk menyusui termasuk membantu terlaksananya Inisiasi Menyusu Dini yang benar. ( Utami, R, 2008)
Peran Bidan sebagai pengelola
Bidan mengembangkan pelayanan dasar kesehatan terutama pelayanan kebidanan untuk individu, keluarga, kelompok khusus dan masyarakat di wilayah kerja dengan melibatkan masyarakat/ klien.
Peran sebagai pendidik
Bidan memberikan pendidikan dan penyuluhan kesehatan kepada individu, keluarga, masyarakat tentang penanggulangan masalah kesehatan khususnya yang berhubungan dengan pihak terkait dengan kesehatan ibu, anak dan Keluarga Berencana. (Heni, P.W., Asmar Y.Z., 2005).

Dalam persiapan pelaksanaan Inisiasi Menyusu Dini bidam memotivasi ibu hamil dan suami/ keluarga untuk melakukan pertemuan, untuk membahas keuntungan ASI, tatalaksana menyusui yang benar, dan Inisiasi Menyusu Dini. (Utami, R, 2008).
Peran Bidan sebaagai peneliti
Melakukan investigasi atau penelitian terapan dalam bidan kesehatan baik secara mandiri ataupun secara kelompok. (Heni, P.W., Asmar Y.Z., 2005).
