Presiden Soekarno dibebaskan dari penjara "Suka Miskin" pada bulan desember 1931 dimana ia dipenjara pada tahun 1929. PNI bentukan Soekarno dibubarkan Belanda pada bulan Juli 1930. Setelah keluar dari penjara, ia kemudian bergabung dengan Partindo dan di daulat kan sebagai Pemimpin Partindo namun ia kembali ditangkap oleh Belanda dan kemudian diasingkan ke Flores.
Setelah empat tahun diasingkan beliau bertemu dengan Moh Hatta yang kemudian keduanya memproklamasikan kemerdekaan pada tanggal 17 Agustus 1945.
