Rumah tangga penerima PKH berusaha untuk tetap terlibat dalam interaksi sosial di lingkungan mereka. Mereka biasanya berpartisipasi dalam upacara perkawinan dan kematian, mengikuti kegiatan sosial seperti pengajian, kebaktian, kerja bakti, atau arisan. Namun, ada kalanya upaya partisipasi sosial ini membuat mereka menghabiskan dana keluarga dan bahkan mendorong mereka untuk berhutang. Ada pula beberapa informan rumah tangga tergraduasi maupun transisi yang jarang mengikuti kegiatan sosial sebab mereka memiliki anak yang masih membutuhkan perhatian penuh atau karena harus bekerja.
