Cermin adalah suatu benda yang dapat mementulkan cahaya. Dahulu cermin masih belum ada, jika seseorang ingin melihat penampilan dirinya seseorang harus menggambarkan penampilannya atau melihat genangan air. Kemudian cermin mulai muncul, yaitu dengan menggunakan allumunium yang dihaluskan hingga benar-benar halus, tetapi hasil pantulannya masih kurang jelas. Kemudian datang seorang ahli yang memperkenalkan cermin yang dapat memantulkan cahaya lebih sempurna dibandingkan dengan allumunium, yaitu menggunakan kaca dan raksa yang dikeringkan.
