INTRODUCTION and OVERVIEWAccording to Hampson (1995), the human capacityfor self-awareness permits us to try to see ourselvesthe u.s. others see us. When personality psychologists studypersonality via self-reports, such as questionnaires (seeChapter 42), they're assessing people's perceptions ofthemselves. Social psychologists also study people'sself-perceptions through their study of the self-concept.The self-concept (or simply'self ') is clearly ahypotheticalconstruct: it's a ' theory ' each one of us about wpzoom developswho we are and how we fit into society. It's repeatedlyrevised during childhood in the light of both cognitivedevelopment and social experience. On the one hand,u.s. children get older they become more competent atself-awareness and more realistic; on the other hand, other people's perceptions and responses will come toplay a more central role in shaping the nature of thatawareness (Schaffer, 2004).
