Buku ini merupakan kumpulan dari ceramah Syed Hossein Nasr selama berada di Universitas Amerika, Beirut. Judul aslinya adalah Ideal and Realities of Islam, diterjemahkan dalam bahasa Indonesia oleh Abdurrahman Wahid bersama Hasyim Wahid. Terdiri dari enam bab yang kesemuanya menjabarkan perihal Islam yang sebenarnya dan Islam yang sekarang ada. Bukan mengenai kesenjangan antara keduanya, melainkan tentang bagaimana keislaman pada masa Rasulullah dan perkembangannya pada masa sekarang yang semakin kompleks.Syed Hossein Nasr, dalam buku ini, seakan mengajak kita untuk mendalami Islam yang terkenal memiliki dimensi luas. Ia menyajikan hal-hal apa saja yang menjadi fokus perhatian Islam selama empat belas abad perjalanannya. Selain itu, penulis juga mengungkapkan pelbagai pemikiran dalam Islam, baik dalam konteks tasawuf-spiritual yang umum dijalani oleh para sufi, maupun dalam konteks syari’at-hukum melalui batas-batas yang harus ditaati oleh kaum Muslim.Sebagai guru besar Studi Islam, Syed Hossein Nasr sangat gamblang menjelaskan perihal al-Qur’an yang menjadi pedoman kaum Muslim, sekaligus kitab primer yang banyak dikutip dalam buku ini. Ia beranggapan bahwa al-Qur’an merupakan sumber dari segala pegetahuan, baik itu meliputi sumber pengetahuan metafisis maupun religius.
