Banjir merupakan fenomena alam berupa naiknya air di suatu kawasan sehingga menutupi permukaan kawasan tersebut. Melalui siklus hidrologi kita melihat bahwa banyaknya air di permukaan bumi dipengaruhi oleh curah hujan dan penyerapan air ke dalam tanah.

Secara alamiah banjir disebabkan oleh terjadinya hujan lokal dan propagasi limpasan dari daerah hulu pada satu daerah tangkapan. Secara non ilmiah banjir dapat terjadi karena ulah manusia. Proses terjadinya banjir secara alamiah itu seperti,turunnya hujan jatuh kepermukaan bumi dan tertahan oleh tumbuh-tumbuhan setelah itu masuk kepermukaan tanah mengalir ketempat yang lebih rendah setelah itu terjadi penguapan dan keluar kepermukaan daratan. Banjir yang terjadi secara almiah dapat menjadi bancana bagi manusia bila banjir itu mengenai manusia dan menyebabkan kerugian bagi manusia.

Sedangkan proses terjadinya banjir secara non alamiah karena ulah manusia seperti,membuang sampah tidak pada tempatnya dan menyebabkan aliran air tidak lancar sehingga air tersebut terapung di tempat pembuangannya semakin lama semakin menguap setelah itu tinggi dan keluar sehingga mengenai daratan dan menyebabkan banjir.
