Puritan period, Inggris pernah menjadi Republik pada zaman ini selama 40 tahun yang dipimpin oleh Oliver Cromwell, kesulitan Elizabeth menentukan Prostestan dan Katolik, akhirnya membangun gereja “Anglican Church”. Terjadi kekejaman pada abad ini, Charles I dibunuh, Charles II pindah and return to England. Abad 17 bermula ke Amerika, puritan adalah imirgan pertama Amerika.
Puisi, Pada periode ini dikenal tiga jenis puisi yaitu, puisi metafisik, puisi cavalier, dan puisi puritan.
1. Puisi Metafisik
Puisi ini pertama kali digunakan oleh Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-1786), seorang sastrawan terkemuka abad ke-18. Puisi metafisik lebih mengutamakan intelek daripada emosi, jadi dalam puisinya didapat banyak istilah-istilah sains. Ciri-ciri metafisik yang berkembang pada abad 17 dan akhir adalah: puisinya pendek selalu padat makna dan irit kata, penggunaan imajinasi yang tidak lazim, penggunaan bahasa yang keras dan kasar, penggunaan istilah sains dan tema berkisar tentang sifat manusia yang mendua fisik dan spiritual. Penyair metafisik yang paling terkemuka adalah :
John Donne (1572-1631), sebagai penyair utama metafisik dilahirkan dalam tradisi keluarga Katolik Roma yang kuat. Dalam menggambarkan gagasan-gagasan dalam puisiny, John Donne tidak menggunakan perbandingan-perbandingan konvensional, tetapi menggunakan fantastik dan hiperbola. Karyanya yang paling menonjol adalah “The Sun Rising”.
2. Penyair Cavalier atau Royalist
Para penyair Cavalier adalah pengikut setia Raja Charles I, memiliki semangat jiwa yang berbeda dengan kelompok penyair metafisik. Mereka mencintai kehidupan duniawi dan tidak begitu fanatik terhadap agama.
Penyair-penyair yang menonjol antara lain Robert Herrick (1591-1674) dengan sajaknya To The Virgin to Make Much of Time, Thomas Carew (1595-1639) dengan sajaknya To His Mistress in Absence, dan Richard Levelace (1618-1658) dengan sajaknya To Althea from Prison.
3. Penyair Puritan
Penyair Puritan yang menonjol adalah John Milton (1608-1674). Disamping menjadi seorang penyair, ia juga menjabat sebagai sekretaris urusan Luar Negeri Oliver Cromwell. Milton dibesarkan menurut ajaran-ajaran Puritan dan sejak kecil sudah menyenangi musik, puisi dan keindahan. Ia memiliki semangat Renaissance dan sangat taat beragama. Karya Milton yang sangat terkenal adalah “Paradise Lost” sebuah sajak epik yang terdiri dari 12 buku, ditulis dalam bentuk “blank verse”.
